The ad tier won. The bill arrived the same week.
Netflix closed its upfront this week with ad commitments nearly double last year's, and its World Cup inventory sold out. Streaming outgrew linear in the upfront. By revenue mix, the ad tier is no longer the discount shelf: ad-supported plans are on track to pass half of North American subscription streaming revenue this year.
The same week delivered the fine print. CPMs are falling across the board, on streaming as well as linear. And the audiences being sold do not sit still: churn keeps undercutting ad plans that were built on subscriber loyalty.
Put those together and the upfront that streaming finally won is a market where volume gets cheaper while the guarantees behind it get softer.
What it costs you: sellers need the growth story more than buyers need the impressions this quarter. That is negotiating leverage. Trade reach discounts for outcome terms while it lasts.
