State of Play

Revised Aug 27, 2026

The moment. OpenAI declared a code red on ChatGPT and pushed its advertising plan back, while expanding ChatGPT ads into 31 European markets, building an enterprise ad sales operation, and losing executives on the way to an IPO. Nvidia neared a $12.9 billion deal for Hugging Face. Germany ruled that AI Overviews and Perplexity fall under media law. An agency ran a fully autonomous CTV buy through PubMatic’s agentic platform.

The tension. The buying layer is being rebuilt around agents faster than anyone can measure what an agent did. Autonomous buying shipped this week; the framework for attributing it is still a draft, and the largest platform is removing the controls advertisers use to decide where they appear.

Who’s moving. OpenAI, on every side of its own ads plan. Google, adding flights and hotel booking to AI Mode while AI Overviews breaks the search bargain with publishers. Meta, stripping placement exclusion controls. PubMatic, running the first fully autonomous buy. IAS, uncovering a fraud scheme hiding in e-book reader apps.

What the desk is watching. Whether agentic buying scales past pilots before attribution catches up, and what removing placement controls does to brand safety when the placements are generated.
